South African wins Miss World

If the prospect of moving to South Africa wasn’t already attractive enough, then perhaps the recent crowning of our very own Rolene Strauss as Miss World might revitalize your interest in our marvelous country. At only 22, Strauss has managed to conquer the most prestigious beauty pageant in the world, while simultaneously being enrolled as a 4th year medical student, shattering the hitherto stereotype that pageant contestants can’t be beautiful as well as intelligent. South Africa’s capacity to produce determined and highly capable young women is historically documented, with an assortment of examples emerging from the ANC Women’s League and countless others scattered across various facets of society.

Mamphela Ramphele

Anti-apartheid activist, author and medical doctor, Mamphela Ramphele has gone on to become one of the most academically decorated South African women, being awarded 18 honorary degrees and numerous other awards. Ramphele was also one of four managing directors of the World Bank and is a trustee for numerous charitable organisations.

Miriam Makeba

Known as “Mama Africa”, Miriam Makeba was a Grammy Award winning South African singer and anti-apartheid activist who popularized African music around the world. She was also the first black woman to ever have a top ten worldwide hit song.

Penny Heyns

Former South African swimmer Penny Heyns is known for being the only woman in the history of the Olympic Games to win the 100m and 200m breaststroke races. At the Janet Evans Invitational in 1999, Heyns set four world records in just two days, and went on to shatter an additional three world records at the Pan Pacific Games in Sydney later that year.
